Evaluation of health-related quality of life and satisfaction with individualized care among patients with chronic kidney disease in a tertiary care facility in Southern Nigeria

Provision of individualized care improves patient satisfaction and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). To assess the HRQoL and satisfaction with individualized care among patients with CKD. A cross sectional, hospital-based study carried out among patients with chronic kidney disease. Data on patients’ satisfaction with individualized care and HRQoL was obtained using the ‘Patient Assessment of Quality of Individualized care for Chronic Illness Scale’ and the English version of the ‘Patient Care Outcome Scale’ (IPOS-renal patient version) respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize data, while inferential statistics was used where applicable with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Eighty patients with CKD participated in this study. Majority (63.7%; n = 51) of the patients had a symptom score of < 10 on the IPOS symptom scale (Range: 0 – 64). The mean individualized care satisfaction score on a scale of 0 – 5 was 4.588 ± 0.756 (Min. = 2; Max.= 5). Majority (38.8%; n = 31) had a HRQoL score between 11 – 20 on the IPOS scale, with a mean HRQoL score of 15.563 ± 9.50 (Range: 0 – 94). Patients’ symptom score and their overall HRQoL was significantly associated (r = 0.856; p < 0.001), however, patients’ satisfaction with individualized care score and their HRQoL score was not significantly associated (r = – 0.120; p = 0.288). The overall HRQoL and satisfaction with care among the patients was good. We found no statistically significant relationship between patients’ satisfaction with individualized care and their HRQoL.
